As part of Hawaii Tech Week, I participated in a panel this evening called "Patent Your Invention & Innovation Archipelago."
The panel was organized by Gloria Borland and it was moderated by Matt Bottomly.
- Olin Lagon (12 patents). First patent granted in 2007, latest patent in 2016.
- John Borland (8 patents). First patent granted in 1990, latest patent in 2023.
As for myself, my 11th patent was published last month. A majority of them involve our unique approach to HIPAA compliant email.
My Takeaways:
- Olin, John, and I are all Hawaii public school graduates. I think Gloria Borland really enjoyed that.
- Olin Lagon got into technology when he learned how to make tattoos while growing up in Kuhio Park Terrace (KPT).
- Olin loves how software engineering, as a profession, does not discriminate
- Two of John Borland's eight patents are Japanese patents
- Two attendees had patents in progress, while three other attendees launched their app AcquiLingua today.

Gloria Borland organized the panel, secured the moderator, and arranged the host venue (Inspiration Hawaii Museum).
A person like Olin Lagon comes along every hundred years. It was a privilege to be on a panel with him today.
The Inspiration Hawaii Museum is the former headquarters of Hawaiian Electric Co. on King Street. Here's a side view of the audience.
