Paubox SMTP API: Everything you need to know

We are pleased to announce that we have rebuilt Paubox SMTP API to provide more ease of use and scale for sending programmatic HIPAA compliant email. 

What's happening: 

•  Customers asked us to build a HIPAA compliant SMTP API so they can take advantage of Paubox Email API without the need to bring in developers.

What is programmatic HIPAA compliant email?

• Programmatic HIPAA compliant email refers to the automated sending of emails that contain protected health information (PHI) via software or APIs, in a way that complies with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

What is an SMTP API? 

• It's a specialized API that allows developers to programmatically send, receive, and manage email through an SMTP server.
• In the case of Paubox SMTP API, you can send HIPAA compliant email for programmatic emails that contain protected health information (PHI). Examples include test results, personalized appointment reminders, receipts, invoices, referrals, discharge instructions, and more.

What's the difference between Paubox SMTP API and Paubox REST API?

• Paubox SMTP API is easier to setup, as it works with any SMTP-compatible server or application. In other words, it's a drop-in replacement for existing mail servers.
• Paubox REST API affords more granular control and is best suited for software developers building custom applications or workflows. For example, dynamic templates are supported only with Paubox REST API. 

How does Paubox SMTP API work?

• Automatic encryption. Paubox SMTP API automatically encrypts all email sent through it. In other words, email and attachments are secured as they travel across the internet via TLS 1.3 or 1.2 encryption.
• Patented fallback solution. If the recipient isn't capable of accepting encrypted email, a secure link is generated to view the message via web browser. This is the Paubox Secure Message Center.

What does setup look like?

You need four settings to setup Paubox SMTP API:

• SMTP server: smtp.paubox.com
• Port number: 25, 465, or 587 supported (unencrypted connections not accepted)
• Username: apikey
• Password: <your API key>

Are HIPAA compliant attachments supported?

• Yes

Are dynamic templates supported?

• No. To take advantage of dynamic templates, use Paubox Email REST API instead.

Is Paubox SMTP API HITRUST certified? 

• Yes, Paubox SMTP API is covered under our HITRUST r2 certification letter.

Can I use it with my Wordpress site? 

• Yep! 

Can I use Paubox SMTP API with my multi-function print scanner?

•  As long as your print scanner supports passwords 40 characters in length, the answer is yes.

Anything else I should know? 

• If you have an onerous compliance requirement that (incorrectly) requires all secure email to be read via a secure link and web browser, you can insert this custom header in Paubox SMTP API to achieve that result:
