The Paubox Kahikina Scholarship helps Native Hawaiian students pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and Tech in general. Its purpose is to offer financial support and create a strong network for these students. The scholarship makes education more affordable and connects students with professionals, giving them valuable opportunities to learn and grow in their chosen STEM or Tech fields. This scholarship is about more than just money; it's about building a community and empowering Native Hawaiian students to succeed in STEM or Tech careers.

As a 2022 recipient, Lagat is now a rising senior at Stanford University. Here is a word from Montana Lagat:
“I’m Montana, and I am a rising senior at Stanford majoring in Materials Science and Engineering. My experience at Stanford has been very transformative and I am grateful to have access to the academic resources available to me as well as the opportunity to meet many highly-motivated individuals from all over the world. As the end of my undergraduate career approaches, I am considering attending graduate school to gain more independent research experience at another university, preferably relating to the field of clean energy. I plan to apply to Stanford’s Coterminal Master’s Program in Materials Science and Engineering, and I hope to work on a project relating to renewable energy storage and battery technologies. Although I am unsure as to what specific , I will discuss my research plans with my department and research advisors to solidify my goals.
This summer, I have enjoyed going to the beach and seeing my family and friends while I have been home before starting my summer internship (see below). I will be working in Honolulu with an organization called Shake Energy Collaborative starting in July. I was connected to them through the TomKat Center for Sustainable Energy Internship Program, which provides several energy-related summer opportunities for Stanford undergraduate students. Shake Energy Collaborative focuses on realizing renewable energy infrastructure in local communities across the Hawaiian islands with an emphasis on amplifying the voices of native/local community members. This experience combines my passion for clean energy and serving communities in Hawaii, the place that has raised me. I am excited to start working with Shake Energy in July!”
