As a 2024 scholarship recipient, Kawika Naweli attended the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa to study a computer science degree. Here is a word from Kawika:
“It’s that time of year again, students searching for support on their educational and professional journey. I can’t express how important it is to explore the different organizations that actively support students, especially in Hawaii.
Many understand the challenges of being a college student, and that’s exactly why they choose to help. All you have to do is accept the support.
If you’re a Native Hawaiian student pursuing STEM, consider looking into the Paubox Kahikina Scholarship, and the Ho’omau Foundation.
Both of these organizations offer more than just financial support. They provide a strong network, relevant career updates, and the motivation to keep pushing forward in your studies.
Working in the software engineering sector, I’ve found that developing a network gives me access to opportunities at local startups and big tech, spaces I’m currently learning to navigate myself.
Communities like these allow you to be surrounded by successful, motivated Hawaiians who share identities and interests. Take that step, apply, and put yourself out there. You never know what doors it might open.”
