City of Columbus experiences multiple data breaches in one day

The City of Columbus experienced two separate security instances in one day.

What happened

On the evening of July 24, the City of Columbus, Indiana, experienced a data breach that led the city's IT Department to quickly implement security measures to limit access to sensitive information. Mike Richardson, the Director of Security and Risk, is leading the investigation to determine the breach's specifics and to enhance security protocols to protect the city's cyber infrastructure in the future.

The breach did not compromise any banking or credit card information. Concurrently, the city faced an internet outage that has disabled all online services, including payment systems and email the morning of the same day. The IT department is working to resolve these allegedly separate issues, and the city will provide updates once services are restored. Scheduled city meetings will proceed despite the disruptions.

What was said

In a statement, City of Columbus Director of Security and Risk, Mike Richardson stated,We are working to investigate this isolated incident and taking measures to put further safeguards in place to mitigate future risk to the city’s cyber infrastructure.”

Why it matters

With email systems down, city employees and officials are unable to exchange information swiftly and efficiently, complicating tasks that depend on quick responses and real-time updates. This disruption affects routine communications, necessary notifications, interdepartmental coordination, and public outreach efforts.

Despite these obstacles, the city has ensured that all previously scheduled meetings proceed as planned, thus maintaining governance functions and ongoing projects. Officials use alternative communication methods, such as phone calls or in-person briefings, to bridge the gap caused by the email outage. The city is actively working to restore full email connectivity and plans to issue updates to the public as progress is made.
