Sensata Technologies ransomware breach affects over 15,000

Sensata Technologies, Inc., a global industrial technology company, has reported a ransomware-related data breach affecting 15,630 individuals. The breach compromised sensitive personal and health information belonging to current and former employees and participants in the company's health and welfare benefit plan.

What happened

According to a notice on its website, Sensata Technologies identified suspicious activity on its network on April 6, 2025, when it discovered that certain servers had been encrypted by ransomware. The company consulted with a cybersecurity firm to investigate and determined that an unauthorized actor had access to its network between March 28 and April 6, 2025, when files were exfiltrated. The company began mailing notification letters to affected individuals on June 5, 2025.

Affected individuals are strongly advised to enroll in the complimentary Experian IdentityWorks services and to remain vigilant by monitoring their financial, credit, and medical statements for any signs of fraudulent activity.

FAQs

What is ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of malicious software used by cybercriminals to encrypt an organization’s files or computer systems. The criminals then demand payment (aransom”) from the victim to restore access to data or systems. In many cases, attackers may also steal data and threaten to release it publicly or sell it if the ransom is not paid.

What is credit monitoring and identity theft protection?

Credit monitoring is a service that tracks activity on your credit files and alerts you to changes that may indicate fraud, such as new accounts opened or large changes in balances. Identity theft protection can include services that monitor for misuse of your personal information (like Social Security numbers or medical data) and help you resolve problems if fraud or identity theft occurs.

What is an 8-K filing?

An 8-K is a form that publicly traded companies in the United States are required to file with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to report major events that shareholders should know about. This can include events like a data breach, bankruptcy, significant lawsuits, executive changes, or other events that could affect the company's financial health or public reputation.
