The HIPAA breach report for July 2023 analyzes protected health information (PHI) breaches affecting 500 or more people as reported to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in June 2023.

  • Network server breaches affected the most people in June 2023. 4,935,147 individuals had their data breached.
  • Email breaches were the second most common breach, with 239,391 people affected.
  • Paper/films breaches affected 16,978 people, the third most common breach type.

Most common breach types

  • Network server was the most common attack vector in June 2023. There were 47 network server breaches.
  • Email breaches were the second most common attack vector. There were 10 email breaches.
  • Paper/films breaches were the third most common attack vectors. There were 4 of these attacks during the month.

  • The number of people affected by email and network server breaches more than doubled in June 2023 compared to June 2022.
  • The impact of laptop breaches has remained lowest across this comparison, with no people affected in June 2021 or June 2023.

What we observe

  • Network server, email, and electronic medical record breach types were the most common attack vectors in this comparison.
  • The highest number of electronic medical record breaches occurred in June 2022.
  • The number of network server breaches has steadily increased across this comparison.

 

Takeaways

Network server breaches affected the most people in June 2023.  Enzo Clinical Labs, Inc. had the most significant breach that affected 2,470,000 people. Murfreesboro Medical Clinic & SurgiCenter had the second-largest breach, which affected 559,000 people.

The yearly comparison shows that network server breaches were the most popular attack vectors for bad actors over the last five June months. Over 13 million total individuals had their data accessed via 122 network server breaches during this time.
