A senior director at the National Crime Agency (NCA), Nikki Holland, has been dismissed due to serious information security breaches.
What happened
Nikki Holland, the former director of investigations at the NCA, was found guilty of breaching NCA standards by sending classified and secret NCA material via her personal email account and WhatsApp groups. The breaches were discovered during an internal disciplinary hearing held on December 21, 2023.

The NCA's disciplinary panel reviewed 16 allegations against Nikki Holland and upheld two allegations of gross misconduct and two allegations of misconduct. The panel determined that Holland had committed gross misconduct by using her personal email account to transmit sensitive and secret NCA material.
Additionally, she was found guilty of declassifying secret material to enable its transmission from an NCA email account to a non-NCA email account. The panel also concluded that Holland had committed misconduct by sending sensitive and secret NCA information through WhatsApp groups and by using WhatsApp on personal devices for NCA communications.
What was said
Apart from the internal disciplinary proceedings, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is conducting an independent investigation into allegations of data protection breaches, bullying, and misuse of public funds involving Nikki Holland and another NCA officer.
This investigation was initiated following a referral from the NCA and both officers have been suspended from their positions since March 2022. The IOPC is still in the process of gathering evidence and assessing the allegations.
