Email AI at work: Voicemail Transcription
During a recent Zoom social mixer, several customers asked us to build a secure transcription solution for their corporate voicemail attachments. As we've covered before, a central tenet of the HIPAA Privacy Rule is that covered entities must have appropriate administrative, technical, and physical safeguards in place to protect the privacy of protected health information (PHI). In the case of our customers, they were acutely concerned over emails sent from their voicemail system containing audio attachments.
More precisely, their concerns lay with the potential of end users opening these attachments in public via smartphones. In his opinion, the risk of PHI being overheard in public obligated him to establish elevated safeguards for his organization. With this in mind, their collective question to us was, “Can you develop something that converts the audio attachments to text instead?”
Using this customer feedback, we leveraged natural language processing (NLP) to detect and transcribe these incoming audio attachments on the fly. We then insert the transcribed text into the message body and securely deliver the email to the end user, leaving the original audio attachment in place.
Another benefit of Email AI is workflow automation. By focusing on certain incoming emails, we are building out robotic process automation (RPA) solutions for our customers in a HIPAA compliant manner. We are excited by the future prospects of this solution and will share more details in the weeks to follow.
