Non-profit healthcare providers eligible for new COVID relief package

Rolled US dollar bills

On December 20, 2020, the U.S. Congress passed a second COVID relief package worth $900 billion. The new bill is welcome news to hundreds of thousands of businesses. Unlike the first package, this time non-profit organizations are eligible to receive funds to help keep their operations afloat. So what can non-profit healthcare providers expect from the new relief package?

Expanded eligibility for 501(c)(6) organizations

In December 2020, a group of non-profit healthcare organizations wrote a letter to Congress asking to receive benefits from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) in a potential second COVID relief bill:

At a time when health care professionals across America are caring for patients on the frontlines of this [public health emergency], national, state and local medical and dental organizations are supporting and providing educational resources so that the health care community has the tools needed to administer the highest quality care during this unprecedented time.

The activism paid off, and 501(c)(6) organizations can now apply for PPP loans to pay their employees, rent, mortgage interest, or utility bills.

A 501(c)(6) organization needs to meet the following criteria to get a PPP loan:

  • It doesn't receive more than 10 percent of its gross receipts from lobbying activities.
  • Lobbying does not comprise more than 10 percent of the organization's total activities.
  • The organization doesn't employ more than 150 employees.
  • There was at least a 30 percent reduction in the organization's gross receipts during the same quarter in 2019.
