Lunch at Pacific Club with Gordo, Linda and Danny

Four people dining together at Pacific Club

Gordon Bruce, myself, Linda Wong and Danny Kaleikini

I had lunch with Gordon Bruce (Gordo), Linda Wong and Danny Kaleikini today at the Pacific Club. Linda and Danny had to leave early for a 1pm meeting, so we met at 11:30am and got down to business.

The Gordo Factor

Gordo and I have known each other for a long time. As he likes to say, I was his boss when we worked together on Pau Spam back in the mid 2000s. I think what's more accurate is that he taught me:
  • How to effectively sell.
  • Provide value.
  • Deliver quality.
  • Be at least 5 minutes early to every appointment.

The culmination of these traits turned into a term I coined, "The Gordo Factor." It's discussed briefly here in a 2004 interview by the Honolulu Advertiser. As you might imagine, these are also core values of Paubox.

Linda Wong and Danny Kaleikini

I met Linda Wong and Danny Kaleikini while volunteering for political campaigns. We got to know each other better on an especially tough loss some years ago. Fast forward to today, Linda is an investor in Paubox and Danny is always behind Hawaiian entrepreneurs.

Here are some of my takeaways from today's lunch:

  • Rich Namerow is a good contact to stay in touch with.
  • "Selling in Hawaii is about relationships." (Gordo)
  • Danny was student body president at Kawanakoa Intermediate.
  • Gordo bought Tom Moffat's record collection.
  •

About the Pacific Club

Dark sculptural archway entrance to the Pacific Club

The Pacific Club is a private social club near downtown Honolulu. It has a checkered past yet is undoubtedly a good place to conduct business. I was a member for several years before I moved to SF.

The first painting you're likely to see upon entering the Pacific Club is a painting by renown artist and McKinley High School graduate, John Young. I really enjoy his work.
