Native Hawaiian woman STEM grant - Paubox Kahikina STEM Scholarship

Written by Hoala Greevy | April 20, 2021

In December I hosted a lunch in Honolulu with a few of our Paubox Kahikina Scholarship recipients.

My takeaways that day included:

  • Expanding the network. There is value in a network and sharing mine is something I can do. Shortly after, we created the Paubox Kahikina Advisor network. The Advisor Network is a fluid group of Native Hawaiian software engineers and executives who are helping the next wave of Hawaiian programmers find their footing in the software industry.
  • Big Tech Prep: Nailing the Interview. I learned helping our recipients prepare for interviews and internships with big tech companies is a need. I then ordered copies of the book “Cracking the Coding Interview” for them.
  • SEO. College debt in America is spiraling out of control. In 2020, it surpassed $1.7 trillion for the first time. As you can imagine, students are actively searching for applicable scholarship opportunities to offset debt load. On that note, creating content like this increases awareness of what we're doing about it.

Native Hawaiian Woman STEM Scholarship

STEM is an acronym for the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. As it applies to Native Hawaiian women pursuing a STEM-related career, a cursory google search for " Native Hawaiian Woman STEM Scholarship" revealed only one relevant match. Funded by Kamehameha Schools and Chaminade University, the Ho’oulu STEM Scholarship looks like a wonderful opportunity for Native Hawaiians attending Chaminade. Clearly there is more to be done in this regard and we are happy to help.
