The Paubox HIPAA Breach Report analyzes  protected health information (PHI) breaches affecting 500 or more people as reported to the HHS in June 2019.  

HIPAA Breaches Ranked by People Affected

 

 

Top Three Breach Types

  • Network Server breaches again ranked in first place with a whopping 3,312,436 people's PHI affected.
  • Email breaches ranked second with PHI of 22,599 people breached.
  • Paper/Films breaches came in third with 6,873 people having their PHI breached.

 

Bottom Three Breach Types

  • Laptop ranked as the lowest number of people's PHI being breached in June with 1,282 breaches.
  • Electronic Medical Record was the second lowest type of breach as ranked by people affected with 2,180.
  • Other was the third lowest type of breach as ranked by people affected with 5,734.

 

HIPAA Breaches Ranked by Occurrence

 

The Most Common

  • Network Server took the top spot as the most common breach type in June with an 7 reported breaches.
  • Email came in second with 6 breaches.
  • Paper/Films and Desktop Computer came in tied third with 4 reported breaches each in June.

 

Takeaways

On June 24th, Dominion National reported a Network Server breach to HHS that affected nearly 3M individuals' PHI. This single breach accounted for 90% of the total for the Network Server category. While Email ranked second as the most common attack vector for HIPAA breaches in June, it has ranked first in the category for 12 of the past 15 months.
